Being Different Is Not Easy: Michelle Dee’s Powerful Message to the Autism Community
“Being different is not easy,” but Miss Universe Philippines 2023 Michelle Dee views it as a superpower. At an intimate press conference, she once again captured the hearts of many Filipinos, especially families with members on the autism spectrum. Michelle’s message of hope and strength resonates deeply with those navigating the challenges of autism.
In partnership with the Autism Society Philippines and SM Cares, Michelle announced the upcoming event, “Angels Walk for Autism,” scheduled for Sunday, May 18, at the Mall of Asia Arena. Remarkably, over 40,000 participants have already registered, highlighting the growing support for this cause.
Sharing Personal Insights on Autism Journey and Early Intervention
Beyond the impressive numbers, Michelle shared her personal journey as an older sister to two siblings with autism. She offered heartfelt advice to parents struggling to accept their child’s diagnosis.
“Number one, early intervention. That’s the best thing you can do habang bata pa ‘cause then we can create a structured program that can help them live a fulfilled life. Siyempre, you want to make sure ‘yung foundations nila tama para paglaki nila andoon na ang lahat ng kailangan nila,” she said.
She continued, “Pero siyempre, for those that are going through it right now, baka mas matanda ‘yung anak niyo o mas bata, just know that you’re not alone, you have thousands of people willing to help you, guide you, help you through whatever it is you are going through.”
Support Systems and Community Strength in Autism Advocacy
Michelle proudly acknowledged the Autism Society Philippines as a vital support system. “That’s what I love about ASP, they’ve always guided me through, they are my mentors, they’ve helped me understand the things about my brothers and what I can do through their help and it’s completely free. Kaya you just have to knock on the doors and ask how we can help you and we have a chapter in almost every corner of the Philippines already kaya just know there’s always somebody willing to give you help.”
She also revealed that she will be part of the event’s highlight, preparing a special performance for attendees. Other notable personalities will join to show their support, including well-known figures from the entertainment industry.
Angels Walk for Autism: A Stand for Purpose and Inclusion
Michelle emphasized that the Angels Walk is more than just a parade; it is a powerful statement of commitment. “It’s not just about strength in numbers, it’s about strength in purpose,” she explained.
“Because different is not easy, being different means ignoring what everyone else is what telling you to do and believing that what you’re doing is right, and I know that in my heart what I’ve been doing with ASP is good, we’re affecting thousands of lives.”
The event will also showcase the talents of individuals on the spectrum in arts and music, giving them a platform to shine. Currently, the Autism Society Philippines has 106 chapters and over 16,000 members nationwide, reflecting a strong, growing community.
