BFAR 5 Distributes Tuna Handline Fishing Boats in Bicol
LEGAZPI CITY – The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) 5 has recently distributed 62-foot tuna handline fishing boats to several provinces across the Bicol region. This initiative aims to boost the livelihoods of local fishers and secure a stable supply of fish for the communities.
According to local officials, each of these fishing boats costs approximately PHP 7 million. The distribution is part of BFAR 5’s ongoing efforts to provide modern fishing equipment and support sustainable fishing practices in the region.
Modern Fishing Technology to Enhance Productivity
Rowena Briones, BFAR-5 spokesperson, shared that the Fisheries Production and Support Services Division has awarded three 62-foot tuna handline boats and one ganet fishing boat. These were handed over to the provinces of Catanduanes, Sorsogon, Camarines Norte, and Masbate.
“BFAR-Bicol, through the Fisheries Production and Support Services Division, has awarded three units of 62-foot boats and one ganet fishing boat as part of a series of distributions to the provinces of Catanduanes, Sorsogon, Camarines Norte, and Masbate. These boats are equipped with modern fishing technology,” she noted.
The boats are specially designed for deep-water handline fishing. They come equipped with advanced gear that not only increases fishing efficiency but also ensures the safety of fishermen during their operations.
Primary Use and Possible Community Benefits
Officials reported that the main purpose of these fishing boats is to enhance livelihood and capture fisheries in the Bicol region. However, the beneficiaries may also use the boats for transportation or community services if they choose, provided that fishing remains the primary focus.
Briones explained, “The primary purpose of these boats is for livelihood and capture fishing. However, if the beneficiaries agree, these boats can also be used for transportation or community services, although the main goal remains fishing.”
Impact on Bicol Fishers and Communities
Community members expressed optimism that the distribution of these 62-foot tuna handline fishing boats will significantly improve the economic conditions of fishermen. The modern equipment is expected to increase catch volume and provide safer working conditions at sea.
Local leaders noted that this program aligns with broader efforts to promote sustainable fishing and responsible resource management in the Bicol region.
