Bicol Police Strengthen Security for Peñafrancia Festival

Preparing Security for Peñafrancia Festival

The Bicol police, together with multiple government and non-government organizations, are intensifying security efforts for the annual Peñafrancia Festival in Naga City. This includes special focus on the Traslación and the fluvial procession events scheduled for the second and third weeks of September. The authorities are committed to ensuring a safe and orderly celebration for all attendees.

“To beef up security, we are deploying over 3,000 policemen to key pilgrimage sites in the coming days,” Police Brig. Gen. Nestor Cruzata Babagay Jr., Bicol police chief, shared with community members. This large deployment reflects the importance of the event and the need to protect the millions who participate.

Massive Crowd Expected, Security Measures Heightened

Local leaders noted that Naga City Mayor Leni Robredo requested enhanced security coverage to safeguard the pilgrims. Officials anticipate over two million pilgrims and tourists will join the festivities, making safety a top priority throughout the event.

“We are expecting more than two million pilgrims and tourists. It is necessary to ensure their safety at all times. Our personnel is ready to respond, following enhanced security protocols,” Babagay emphasized. The police chief also assured that all critical installations will be closely guarded, following directives from Philippine National Police chief Gen. Melencio Nartatez Jr.

Traffic and Crowd Control Plans Underway

Aside from bolstering security, authorities are finalizing traffic management strategies to provide convenience for the large number of participants. “We will also make sure that pilgrims are properly guided as we finalize traffic management plans for their convenience,” Babagay added. These measures aim to minimize congestion and ensure smooth flow during the procession days.

Joint Operations Center Reactivated

In addition to on-ground security, the city government has reactivated the Peñafrancia Joint Operations Center. This command hub will centralize coordination, communication, and control throughout the month-long celebration. Local officials believe this will improve response times and enhance overall event management, especially given the massive influx of visitors.

The combined efforts of the police and partner agencies reflect a strong commitment to uphold safety and order during one of Bicolandia’s most significant cultural and religious events.
