Bigasan ng Bayan Launches Affordable Rice Sale in Negros Occidental
BACOLOD CITY — The Bigasan ng Bayan program launched its rice sale at P20 per kilo in Pulupandan town on Tuesday, June 24. This initiative aims to provide affordable rice to the community, especially targeting vulnerable groups.
The program benefited 500 residents from marginalized sectors, allowing each to buy up to five kilos of rice. The sale was a collaborative effort between the Negros Occidental provincial government and the Federation of Irrigators’ Association of Central Negros-Bago River Irrigation System (FIACN-BRIS).
Support for Vulnerable Communities
FIACN-BRIS president Pedro Limpangog reported that 50 sacks of rice were sold during the event. Rice buyers included senior citizens, solo parents, persons with disabilities, and members of the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps), all presenting valid IDs to qualify.
Limpangog emphasized that with assistance from the provincial government through farm inputs and labor, the group managed to lower rice prices from P25 to P20 per kilo under Bigasan ng Bayan. “This reduction helps many families cope with the rising cost of living,” he added.
Plans to Sustain and Expand the Program
Looking ahead, Limpangog said they will coordinate with the provincial government to identify new locations for future rice sales priced at P20 per kilo. “We will make sure this program will continue,” he assured local residents.
This initiative follows similar efforts in other regions, where local governments have ordered thousands of bags of rice priced at P20 per kilo to support their communities.
