BIR Ready to Investigate Atong Ang’s Businesses
MANILA, Philippines — The Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) expressed its readiness to investigate Atong Ang’s businesses if credible information is presented. The agency emphasized its commitment to ensuring proper tax compliance by all, including businessman Charlie Tiu Hay Ang, popularly known as Atong Ang.
“We will look into everything once we have information to start with. We will also look into everyone involved because we just want to make sure that everyone is paying the correct taxes,” BIR Commissioner Romeo Lumagui Jr. said during a press briefing at the Department of Justice (DOJ). When asked if the agency is currently probing Ang’s business interests, Lumagui clarified that no request for investigation has been received so far.
Allegations and Legal Actions Against Atong Ang
Atong Ang, a known gaming tycoon, faces serious accusations. His former trusted aide and whistleblower, Julie Patidongan, accused him of masterminding the disappearance of dozens of sabungeros, or cockfight enthusiasts. Ang has denied these allegations.
Last week, formal complaints were filed against Ang, members of the so-called Alpha Group, and several Philippine National Police personnel. The charges include multiple counts of murder and serious illegal detention. Authorities continue to investigate these claims amid public concern.
Despite the serious accusations, the BIR maintains that no official investigation into Ang’s businesses is underway unless credible evidence is presented. The agency’s stance highlights its focus on fairness and due process in all tax-related matters.
