BJMP Bansud District Jail Advances Education Behind Bars
BANSUD, Oriental Mindoro — The Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP)–Bansud District Jail proudly marked its eighth “Moving Up and Graduation” ceremony on July 9, 2025, honoring inmate-learners who completed elementary and junior high education during the 2024–2025 school year. This event highlights BJMP’s dedication to education behind bars as a vital tool for rehabilitation and successful reintegration into society.
Acting District Jail Warden Senior Inspector Nelmar Malilmata commended the 35 graduates—six elementary and 29 junior high students—for their unwavering commitment and hard work despite their circumstances. “Education plays a pivotal role in transforming lives behind bars,” he stated, expressing gratitude toward partner agencies, prison educators, and stakeholders for their ongoing support of the Alternative Learning System (ALS).
Certificates and Encouragement for Lifelong Learning
The graduates received certificates of completion from District ALS Focal Person Francisco Alinio, following formal recognition by Public Schools District Supervisor Dr. Genalin Alinio. Keynote speaker Donalyn de Guzman Jamilla inspired the learners to embrace lifelong education, emphasizing its power to open new doors even while confined.
Meanwhile, Education Program Supervisor I for ALS, Odesca Salazar, praised the jail staff for their consistent efforts in delivering programs that enable persons deprived of liberty (PDLs) to reshape their futures. She noted, “These initiatives help PDLs gain skills and knowledge that support their growth beyond incarceration.”
New Learning Spaces Support Rehabilitation Efforts
Earlier in 2025, proceeds from the October 2024 Color Fun Run funded the establishment of the Silid-Kulay ng Pag-asa classroom. By February 2025, this new facility welcomed 23 elementary learners and 29 junior high students, providing a dedicated space for study and personal development.
BJMP Mimaropa Regional Information Officer Jail Officer 3 Joefrie Anglo reaffirmed the bureau’s steadfast commitment to productive rehabilitation, stating, “Through initiatives like ALS, we give hope and empower PDL-learners to rewrite their life stories and prepare for their reintegration into society.”
This ceremony and ongoing programs demonstrate how BJMP Bansud District Jail continues to prioritize education behind bars as a means to unlock potential and build brighter futures.
