BOC Seizes P31.92 Million Worth of Smuggled Goods Early

BOC Seizes P31.92 Million Worth of Smuggled Goods in Zamboanga

The Bureau of Customs (BOC) recently seized P31.92 million worth of smuggled cigarettes, marine objects, and four vehicles during four separate operations in Zamboanga last July. These efforts were part of a coordinated campaign to stop illegal imports and protect Philippine industries.

In a statement released Thursday, the BOC confirmed that the joint operations by the Enforcement and Security Service (ESS), Customs Intelligence and Investigation Service (CIIS), and the Office of the District Collector uncovered 370 master cases of smuggled cigarettes and 250 sacks of white sand mixed with broken corals. The drivers transporting these goods failed to present the necessary import permits and documents, raising immediate suspicion.

Vehicles and Contraband Now Under Forfeiture Proceedings

Following the seizures, the Port of Pampanga has placed both the confiscated items and the vehicles involved under forfeiture proceedings. Authorities are actively pursuing a case build-up to identify and hold accountable those responsible for these illegal activities.

Moreover, the BOC has issued warrants of seizure and detention. These actions address violations of tobacco regulations under Executive Order No. 245 and the Customs Modernization and Tariff Act. They also cover breaches of the Philippine Mining Act and Batas Pambansa Blg. 265 related to the marine objects seized.

Local sources noted the significance of these operations in curbing the flow of smuggled goods that harm the economy and violate environmental laws. The crackdown reflects the BOC’s commitment to enforcing customs laws and protecting natural resources.

Strengthening Enforcement to Stop Smuggling

The Bureau of Customs continues to enhance its enforcement efforts, collaborating with different agencies to prevent smuggling across the country. These recent actions in Zamboanga are part of a broader strategy to safeguard the Philippines’ borders and preserve public welfare.

By targeting both the contraband and the vehicles used for transport, authorities send a strong message to smugglers that illegal activities will face strict consequences. This approach aims to dismantle smuggling networks and reduce the availability of illicit goods in the market.
