Bohol Champions Harassment-Free Work Environment for Seafarers
TAGBILARAN CITY – Seafarers, maritime students, and community stakeholders in Bohol gathered to celebrate the Day of the Filipino Seafarer on June 25, 2025. The event highlighted the vital role maritime workers play in the economy while strongly advocating a harassment-free work environment at sea.
A short program was held at the provincial capitol, organized by the Maritime Industry Authority (Marina), Southern Institute of Maritime Studies, local maritime schools, training centers, and families of seafarers. The key focus was to promote awareness about the importance of safe and respectful workplaces onboard ships.
Promoting Safety and Respect at Sea
This year’s celebration aimed to shed light on creating supportive and inclusive conditions for maritime workers. Organizers emphasized that a harassment-free work environment is essential to protect the dignity and welfare of seafarers across the globe.
Bohol, known as a popular tourist destination, ranks among the top 10 provinces in the country producing skilled seafarers. The province’s maritime community takes pride in their contributions to the industry.
Personal Stories Inspire Commitment
Panglao Mayor Edgardo “Boy” Arcay shared his inspiring journey from being a seaman to becoming an international sea captain. Addressing seafarers’ families, he said, “Be kind. You must pray for the safety of your husband while at sea.” He also described the seafaring career as a unique chance to “see the world for free.”
Local Leaders Recognize Seafarers’ Vital Role
Bohol Governor Erico Aristotle Aumentado honored the sacrifices and contributions of Boholano seafarers. He remarked, “Today, we celebrate the important role that our seafarers play in international trade and the global economy, while also highlighting their role in shaping a society that is smart, resilient, and inclusive.”
He added, “We honor our seafarers for the daily sacrifices they make to provide better lives for their families and deliver goods while passing through areas prone to piracy and other life-threatening situations.”
The governor assured continued support from the provincial government for initiatives that protect and empower seafarers.

Globally, the United Nations recognizes seafarers as essential contributors to economic growth and maritime safety. The “Day of the Seafarer” is officially observed to honor their dedication and to promote a safe, respectful, and environmentally responsible maritime industry.
