Brian Poe Advocates National Framework for Water Resource Management
Newly elected FPJ Bayanihan party-list Rep. Brian Poe has filed a bill to create a national framework for water resource management. This crucial legislation aims to reform how the Philippines manages its water resources, addressing longstanding issues of fragmented governance.
The bill also calls for establishing a Department of Water Resources and a Water Regulatory Commission to oversee and regulate water management effectively. Poe emphasized the urgency of this measure, given the country’s abundant water resources yet persistent difficulties in providing clean and affordable water to millions of Filipinos.
Despite the Philippines’ rich renewable water supply, many communities still struggle with limited access to safe drinking water and proper sanitation. Poe highlighted the health risks and financial burdens this situation imposes, saying it often leaves vulnerable populations exposed to waterborne diseases and poor hygiene conditions.
Addressing Water Challenges Through Unified Governance
Poe pointed out that past water crises, such as severe shortages in Metro Manila, reveal the government’s weak response to supply disruptions. The absence of a unified water management system has worsened these challenges, affecting public health and sanitation standards nationwide.
“This bill aims to transform how we manage our water resources, providing a structured and unified strategy that can assure the availability of clean water for all Filipinos,” Poe stated. “Water is a fundamental human right, and through this measure, we can ensure that every citizen has equitable access to this essential resource.”
The proposed framework seeks to enhance coordination among various sectors and government bodies, while empowering local communities to manage their water resources sustainably. By promoting collaboration and resilience, the initiative intends to reduce risks linked to water shortages and improve health outcomes across the country.
Call for Collective Support for Water Reform
Poe urged fellow lawmakers and the public to back this vital reform, stressing that safeguarding the nation’s water supply requires collective action. He envisions a unified, resilient water governance system that protects this precious resource for future generations.
With this bill, Poe hopes to pave the way for sustainable water management that benefits all Filipinos, ensuring clean and safe water is accessible to every community.
