Bridge in Barangay Pamantingan Cleared for Motorists
A bridge in Barangay Pamantingan, Esperanza, Sultan Kudarat that was temporarily blocked by huge boulders has been cleared and is now passable, according to local authorities. The sudden obstruction occurred following continuous rains on Wednesday, May 14, 2025, when strong water currents swept large rocks from a nearby creek onto the bridge.
The Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO) confirmed that clearing operations were completed promptly, allowing vehicles to use the bridge again. This bridge is vital as it connects the road heading to Barangay Salumping and serves residents of Barangay Villamonte in Lebak town.
Flood Impact and Evacuation Efforts
Aside from the blocked bridge, flooding forced the evacuation of five families who received assistance from the local government. Barangay Pamantingan Chairwoman Gloria Ugalingan Pasaan shared, “Limang bahay, dito na sila sa barangay hall. Five families, walang damage, pero nadaanan sila ng tubig.” This means that while the homes were not damaged, floodwaters passed through their area, prompting temporary shelter at the barangay hall.
Weather Conditions Causing Disruptions
Local weather experts attribute the heavy rains and flooding to the intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ), a weather disturbance that continues to affect parts of Mindanao. The persistent rains have contributed to conditions that caused the boulders to block the bridge and led to localized flooding affecting residents nearby.
Authorities remain vigilant as they monitor the situation to ensure the safety of residents and the usability of key infrastructure like the Barangay Pamantingan bridge.
