Broadcaster Convicted of Cyber Libel
A broadcaster in Iloilo City has been found guilty beyond reasonable doubt on three counts of cyber libel. The court ruled against Salvador Capulot Jr., also known as “Jun Capulot” on air, after a case filed by a contractor from Guimaras Province.
The contractor, identified as Shariko Salcedo, accused Capulot of damaging his reputation through statements made during three episodes of the broadcaster’s program. These episodes were aired on September 5, September 25, and October 8, 2020.

Capulot was sentenced to imprisonment ranging from six months and one day to two years and four days. Additionally, the court ordered him to pay damages and other related costs to the complainant.
The broadcaster’s legal counsel advised him not to comment publicly on the case. Meanwhile, the complainant’s lawyer highlighted the defamatory remarks that led to the conviction.
Defamatory Statements Cited
Atty. Aida Rose Villanueva, representing Salcedo, explained, “For example, tinawag niyang adik. Nag-claim umano siya na nang-bribe, humihithit (ng illegal drugs). These words were defamatory, nag-cause ng paninira sa reputation ng aming kliyente.” These accusations during the program were central to the cyber libel charges.
