BRP Rajah Sulayman Launch Sparks Maritime Security Commitment
In June 2025, the Philippine Navy unveiled the BRP Rajah Sulayman (FF-108), the first offshore patrol vessel (OPV) in a new fleet aimed at enhancing maritime security. Named after the 16th-century leader Rajah Sulayman, who fiercely resisted Spanish colonization in Luzon, this ship symbolizes the country’s unwavering commitment to protecting its sovereignty.
The launch of BRP Rajah Sulayman represents a major milestone in the Armed Forces of the Philippines’ (AFP) ongoing modernization efforts. The Department of National Defense (DND) procured six OPVs from South Korea, with this vessel leading the way. The move comes amid increasing challenges faced by Filipinos in the West Philippine Sea, including harassment and bullying.
Strengthening Defense Through Strategic Partnerships
AFP Chief of Staff Gen. Romeo S. Brawner Jr. led the launching ceremony in Ulsan, South Korea, alongside Hyundai Heavy Industries’ top executives. He highlighted the strong collaboration between the Philippines and South Korea, which plays a crucial role in boosting the nation’s maritime defense and self-reliance.
“The launch of Offshore Patrol Vessel No. 1, the BRP Rajah Sulayman, is not merely the unveiling of a new ship—it is a bold declaration of our commitment to maritime security and the defense of our sovereignty,” Brawner said. He added that this vessel ushers in a new chapter for the Philippine Navy, expanding its operational reach across the country’s vast maritime territory.
A Symbol of Filipino Resilience and Independence
The ship’s namesake, Rajah Sulayman, embodies the Filipino spirit of resilience and resistance against foreign domination. Brawner remarked, “As the nation honors its past, the AFP remains steadfast in shaping a future where freedom is not only celebrated but vigilantly safeguarded.”
Since the 2012 Scarborough Shoal standoff, the Philippine government has aggressively modernized its military. The acquisition of 12 fighter jets from South Korea marked a significant step, and the AFP recently confirmed plans to purchase 12 additional jets to further strengthen defense capabilities.
This strategic investment in military assets, including the BRP Rajah Sulayman, reflects the country’s resolve to secure its maritime borders amid regional tensions. It sends a clear message that the Philippines is determined to protect its people and sovereignty with advanced, reliable equipment.
