Bulacan Floodwaters Reach Six Feet in Several Areas
Floodwaters in Bulacan have risen up to six feet in some locations after days of relentless rains. The heavy downpour, fueled by Typhoon Crising, an enhanced southwest monsoon (habagat), high tide, and dam releases, pushed water levels dangerously high.
Local officials reported that in Sitio Nabong, Barangay Meysulao, Calumpit, floodwaters surged to around six feet. The exact situation was confirmed by disaster management authorities monitoring the area closely.
Relief Efforts and Affected Communities
In response, Bulacan Governor Daniel Fernando and Vice Governor Alexis Castro distributed food packs to families affected by the flooding, particularly in Bocaue. The provincial disaster office noted that several low-lying and coastal towns, including Hagonoy, Paombong, Calumpit, and Bulakan, were submerged. Inland communities such as Guiguinto, Marilao, Meycauayan City, Sta. Maria, and Bocaue also faced severe flooding.
Dam Releases and River Swells
Water levels in rivers along the Angat River rose sharply after the Bustos Dam released 412 cubic meters per second (cms) on Sunday. This action followed the upstream release from the Ipo Dam, which feeds into Bustos Dam.
As of Sunday, Bustos Dam stood at an elevation of 15.88 meters, with Ipo Dam just below spilling level at 100.52 meters. Disaster officials said that on July 19, Ipo Dam began releasing 103.25 cms after its water level rose above the spilling mark of 101.00 meters.
By Monday, Bustos Dam was still releasing 240 cms, while Ipo Dam’s elevation remained at 100.62 meters.
Impact of High Tide and Persistent Rainfall
High tide further worsened the flooding, with seawater levels exceeding 3.6 feet since the weekend. This caused coastal barangays to be inundated. Meanwhile, the Angat Dam’s water level climbed nearly four meters over the weekend, from 191.88 meters on Friday to 195.92 meters by Monday, due to continuous rainfall.
Local Relief Operations Continue
In Marilao, Mayor Jem Sy took relief efforts to flood-hit barangays by distributing goods via rescue boats. These operations aim to reach stranded residents and provide essential supplies amid ongoing water surges.
