Tragic Death During Bulacan Government Aid Distribution
A heartbreaking incident unfolded at the Bulacan Capitol Gymnasium as a 40-year-old man suffered a fatal medical emergency while waiting to receive government assistance. Walfredo Ople Catajan Jr., a beneficiary of the Bulacan government aid program, suddenly collapsed due to acute coronary syndrome. This unexpected event has deeply affected the local community and officials.
Catajan Jr., a resident of Barangay Sto. Niño in Hagonoy town, was among the recipients of the Department of Social Welfare and Development’s Emergency Cash Transfer (ECT) program, which provides P5,625 to eligible beneficiaries. Around 10:40 a.m., as he awaited his turn, he experienced severe chest pains and discomfort, prompting immediate action from government responders.
Rapid Response and Medical Efforts
Emergency personnel swiftly transported Catajan to Bulacan Medical Center, located within the Provincial Capitol grounds. Medical staff administered cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and performed an electrocardiogram (ECG) to assess his heart condition. Despite these efforts, the medical team was unable to revive him, and he was pronounced dead at approximately 11:05 a.m.
Dr. Cris Carlo Pedrosa, an internal medicine specialist at the hospital, confirmed that acute coronary syndrome caused Catajan’s death. This condition occurs when the heart muscle suddenly loses its blood supply, often leading to fatal outcomes if not treated immediately.
Community and Official Reactions
Relatives revealed that Catajan had a history of heart problems. The sudden loss has prompted an outpouring of sympathy from local leaders, including Governor Daniel Fernando, Vice Governor Alexis Castro, and Rowena Joson Tiongson, head of the Bulacan Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office (PSWDO).
Joson expressed heartfelt condolences and emphasized the government’s commitment to assisting vulnerable citizens. “The unexpected incident pains us so much in the PSWDO and the whole of the Provincial Government of Bulacan. Our only intention in all the programs of the Provincial Government of Bulacan through the leadership of our Gov. Daniel Fernando is to bring immediate help and assistance to help ease the daily lives of our fellow Bulakenyos particularly the ones in need,” she said.
Ensuring Safety in Future Aid Distributions
Officials assured that the Emergency Cash Transfer program will continue without interruption. However, they also pledged to implement additional safety measures to prevent similar tragedies during future government aid distributions.
On Sunday, Tiongson and Provincial Administrator Antonette Constantino visited Catajan’s wake in Hagonoy town to personally offer the provincial government’s condolences to his grieving family. This gesture highlights the local government’s dedication to supporting families affected by such unfortunate events.
