Bulacan Leaders Urge Bold Steps Toward National Freedom
Bulacan Governor Daniel Fernando called on Filipinos to take bold steps toward national freedom and progress during the 127th Philippine Independence Day celebration. Held on June 12 at the historic Barasoain Church in Malolos, Bulacan, the event carried the theme “Kalayaan. Kinabukasan. Kasaysayan.”
Fernando reminded everyone that this day is more than a tribute to history; it honors the courage, unity, and patriotism of those who sacrificed everything for the nation’s liberty. “We are united in the desire to promote the spirit of freedom by being prudent, hardworking, and nationalistic citizens. May this day serve as an inspiration for us to continue to unite for a more progressive and peaceful nation,” the governor said.
Reflection on Rizal’s Timeless Words and National Challenges
Senate President Francis Escudero began his speech by reciting the opening lines of Jose Rizal’s poem: “Adios, Patria adorada, region del sol querida, Perla del Mar de Oriente, nuestro perdido Eden!” He highlighted how Rizal’s sentiments remain relevant, emphasizing that even after more than a century, the Philippines still faces persistent challenges.
“Mayaman ang Pilipinas, masipag at mababait ang mga tao subalit bakit hanggang ngayon laganap pa rin ang kahirapan sa ating bansa. Ano ang problema? Ano ang solusyon at ano ang dahilan at ano ang mga pamamaraan,” Escudero asked, stressing the need to analyze and address the root causes of poverty despite the country’s wealth and hardworking citizens.
He urged all Filipinos to unite across all divides—age, status, education, appearance, or gender—to overcome hardships and transform the nation into a true paradise, not a forgotten one.
Barasoain Church: Cradle of the First Republic
The Barasoain Church and Malolos City hold a special place in Philippine history as the birthplace of the First Republic, not just in the country but across Asia. It was here that the Malolos Congress convened, leading to the drafting of the Malolos Constitution and the inauguration of General Emilio Aguinaldo as the nation’s first president.
Local officials attending the celebration included Vice Governor Alex Castro, Malolos City Mayor Christian Natividad, Bulacan First District Representative Danilo Domingo, and several others. The National Historical Commission of the Philippines and the Provincial History, Arts, Culture, and Tourism Office also collaborated to make the event possible.
The program began with the simultaneous raising of the Philippine flag at 7:00 a.m., followed by a wreath-laying ceremony at Aguinaldo’s statue, symbolizing respect for the country’s founding heroes.
Honoring the Past, Inspiring the Future
Independence Day, observed every June 12, marks the historic declaration of the Philippines’ freedom from Spanish rule in 1898. This celebration serves as a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made for liberty and the ongoing journey toward national progress.
By recalling the bravery and unity of the past, leaders encourage Filipinos to take bold steps toward a brighter future—one defined by freedom, prosperity, and peace.
