Bureau of Customs Seizes Shabu Worth P749.63 Million
MANILA, Philippines — The Bureau of Customs made a significant drug bust, confiscating shabu worth P749.63 million from balikbayan boxes at the Manila International Container Port. This operation unfolded on Thursday, highlighting the agency’s commitment to intercept illegal substances entering the country.
The seizure came after a Customs alert order targeted a 1-by-40-feet container declared to contain balikbayan boxes. Upon inspection, officials uncovered 110.24 kilograms of methamphetamine hydrochloride hidden inside four of these boxes.
Inspection and Verification of Confiscated Drugs
The Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) conducted laboratory tests to verify the nature of the seized items. The results confirmed the substance as shabu, a powerful and illegal stimulant.
Following the confirmation, the Bureau of Customs handed over the confiscated drugs to PDEA for further investigation. Authorities are now pursuing cases under Republic Act 9165, known as the Dangerous Drugs Act, as well as Republic Act 10863 or the Customs Modernization and Tariff Act.
Ongoing Efforts Against Illegal Drugs
This recent discovery is part of ongoing efforts by government agencies to combat the trafficking of illegal drugs through shipping ports. Officials continue to strengthen monitoring and inspection protocols to prevent similar shipments from entering the country.
Sources noted that the successful interception underscores the importance of vigilance in safeguarding national security and public health.
