BOC Hands Over Abandoned Balikbayan Boxes to DMW
DAVAO CITY – The Bureau of Customs (BOC) officially handed over 2,954 balikbayan boxes to the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) during a ceremony on the morning of May 29 at the Port of Davao. These balikbayan boxes, sent by overseas Filipino workers from various countries, had been abandoned after mishandling and neglect by unreliable freight forwarding companies. The boxes were stored at the Port of Davao before the turnover.
The balikbayan boxes carry deep meaning for many Filipino workers abroad. One overseas Filipino worker expressed her joy upon hearing about the turnover. A source familiar with the matter shared that she had been waiting for nearly three years to receive the packages she prepared for her family.
DMW Ensures Direct Delivery to OFW Homes
An official from the DMW’s Reintegration Service assured that the 2,954 packages, which came from twelve 40-foot containers, will be delivered straight to the homes of overseas Filipino workers. The DMW will cover all delivery costs to ensure the boxes reach their intended recipients.
“It’s not the box we’re honoring. We’re honoring the hard work, sacrifices, and love behind each and every package. Rest assured, your government remains steadfast in ensuring that all these balikbayan boxes, along with the hope they carry, will reach your homes,” said a representative of the department.
Balikbayan boxes, often filled with food, clothing, and gifts, symbolize the love and dedication of Filipino workers overseas. They help keep families connected and represent the workers’ commitment to providing a better life for their loved ones.
Significance of the Balikbayan Boxes Turnover
The turnover is more than just handing over packages; it marks a milestone in government accountability and compassion towards the Filipino diaspora. Community leaders emphasized that this gesture shows solidarity with overseas Filipino workers and their families.
The Bureau of Customs highlighted that the turnover concludes months of coordinated efforts starting early 2024. Customs officials proactively reached out to the DMW to resolve the issue of mishandled and abandoned balikbayan boxes.
From obtaining legal clearances to managing logistics, the BOC worked diligently to release the packages through proper channels. The DMW will now oversee distribution and delivery to the recipients.
BOC’s Commitment to Service and Reform
Led by Commissioner Bienvenido Rubio, the Bureau of Customs pledged to continue reforms that extend beyond trade enforcement. The bureau aims to align its services with the needs of the people, demonstrating that efficiency and compassion can go hand in hand.
The successful turnover reflects the BOC’s dedication to improving public service and supporting the welfare of overseas Filipino workers. It also reassures the community that their sacrifices and hopes remain valued and respected.
