Combating Human Trafficking with Renewed Focus
The Bureau of Immigration is stepping up its fight against human trafficking, alerting the public about the growing use of deceptive schemes targeting Filipino travelers leaving the country. These tactics often involve tricking passengers into becoming unwitting participants in smuggling operations.
One common method, known as the “bitbit” or tag-along scheme, involves experienced travelers acting as couriers to covertly transport others under false pretenses. This troubling trend has prompted the agency to enhance its vigilance and enforcement.
Enhancing Coordination and Technology
Under the leadership of the bureau’s commissioner, the agency has strengthened collaboration with local law enforcement agencies. Their goal is to prevent human trafficking by intercepting victims before they are smuggled through unauthorized routes.
“We will focus on modernization through advancements in technology and legal reforms to simplify immigration processes and improve overall efficiency,” the commissioner said. To support this, the bureau has been upgrading its screening technology and streamlining procedures at checkpoints to detect suspicious activities promptly.
Legal Reforms and Enforcement Actions
Alongside technological upgrades, the bureau is reinforcing the legal framework to curb these deceptive schemes effectively. These reforms aim to close loopholes and provide stronger penalties for offenders.
Earlier this year, the agency deported 57 foreigners as part of a crackdown on illegal aliens, many linked to unauthorized offshore gaming activities. Additionally, 450 foreign nationals were arrested in January for various immigration violations, demonstrating the bureau’s commitment to strict enforcement.
