Ambulance Driver Faces Suspension After Drug Bust
In Cadiz City, Negros Occidental, an ambulance driver employed by the local government is set for automatic suspension following his arrest in a recent drug bust. Mayor Salvador Escalante Jr. announced on Monday that if the driver is found guilty, he will be dismissed from service.
The incident unfolded in Barangay Singcang-Airport, Bacolod City, where authorities apprehended the ambulance driver, identified as “Riche,” 50, along with “Evon,” 27, a call center agent residing in Cadiz City. Both individuals were caught in possession of approximately 80 grams of suspected shabu, with an estimated street value of P544,000, officials reported.
Details of the Arrest and Background
Local leaders noted that Riche is a regular employee of the Cadiz City government. Both suspects were on the police watchlist prior to their arrest. Evon, described as a “high-value individual” involved in the illegal drug trade, had a previous arrest record and was currently on probation.
Mayor Escalante revealed that earlier this year, Riche had managed to avoid random drug tests conducted by the city government, raising concerns about his compliance with workplace policies.
City Government’s Response to Drug Use
Community members said that the local government has been actively addressing drug-related issues within its workforce. Earlier, 22 job order employees tested positive for illegal drug use. As a result, their contracts were not renewed to uphold the integrity of the city’s services.
Escalante emphasized the city’s commitment to maintaining a drug-free workplace, stating, “We will take swift action against any employee involved in illegal activities to protect our community and public trust.”
Ongoing Efforts to Combat Illegal Drugs
Authorities continue to intensify their campaign against illegal drugs in the region. The arrest of the ambulance driver and his companion highlights the risks of drug infiltration even within government services. Officials reported that they will monitor the investigation closely and enforce necessary disciplinary measures.
Residents expressed their hope that this case will serve as a warning to others and reinforce the city’s zero-tolerance stance on illegal drugs.
