Cagayan de Oro Debuts First Public School AI Training
CAGAYAN DE ORO — Dansolihon National High School (DNHS) has become the first public school in the Philippines to offer specialized Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology training and laboratory facilities. This groundbreaking initiative gives students from Indigenous Peoples (IP) communities early access to AI tools and skills.
The AI laboratory was established through a collaboration between the local government and Skunkworks, a private tech company that focuses on AI, coding, digital literacy, and data annotation. This partnership aims to equip students with cutting-edge technological expertise.
Empowering Indigenous Students Through AI Technology
Skunkworks president Thor Turecha explained that the program offers IP students hands-on experience with AI, including drone operations and other digital skills. “This is not just a school or a lab. It’s a launchpad for innovation, making Cagayan de Oro the future ‘Creative Technology Capital of the Philippines,’” he said.
Mayor Rolando Uy highlighted that the project is a key initiative of the Local School Board, which he chairs, and involves coordination with the Department of Education and other government bodies. DepEd City Division Superintendent Rey Angelo Gazo praised the program as a vital step in shaping future innovators and empowering youth.
Teacher Training and Expansion Plans
Before launching the AI training, selected DNHS teachers underwent intensive sessions facilitated by Skunkworks from June 2 to 9. This preparatory training ensured educators are ready to guide students through the new curriculum effectively.
Turecha shared that Dansolihon was chosen for the pilot because of its unique cultural identity, with nearly all students coming from Lumad communities. “Our vision is to transform a village and make innovation happen,” he added.
Looking ahead, a second AI hub will open later this year at City Central School, expanding access to AI education.
Support from Government Agencies
Nideliza Nacilla, provincial officer of the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) in Misamis Oriental, assured local officials in Northern Mindanao of continued support for digital initiatives. “We are here to support you in transforming trust into real impact,” she said during a recent orientation for newly elected officials.
This pioneering AI training program marks a significant milestone in integrating technology with education, especially in underserved Indigenous communities. It also sets a model for other regions aiming to boost digital skills among the youth.
