Cagayan Province Declares State of Calamity
The Cagayan provincial board has officially declared the province under a state of calamity following the severe destruction caused by Supertyphoon Nando. The declaration came after the typhoon left at least eight people dead and inflicted widespread damage across the region.
Vice Governor Manuel Mamba shared that during the board’s special session on Friday, September 26, officials assessed the situation and acknowledged the urgent need for immediate relief and recovery efforts. The state of calamity declaration will facilitate faster government response and access to emergency funds.
Heavy Losses in Agriculture and Infrastructure
Local leaders noted that the initial damage estimate reached a staggering P655.61 million. This figure reflects the combined losses in agriculture and public infrastructure. Fields of crops were devastated, and numerous roads and bridges suffered severe damage, disrupting transportation and communication within the province.
Community members expressed deep concern over the impact on farmers and families who rely heavily on agriculture for their livelihood. “Panginoon lang ang makapagtulong sa amin ngayon,” one resident said, highlighting the desperation felt by many.
Response Efforts and Recovery Plans
Officials reported that the provincial government is coordinating with national agencies to expedite relief distribution and rehabilitation programs. The state of calamity status enables local authorities to implement price controls and prevent hoarding of essential goods, ensuring fair access for affected communities.
Vice Governor Mamba emphasized the importance of unity and resilience, stating, “We will rebuild stronger and support every family affected by this calamity.” Recovery plans include restoring damaged infrastructure and providing assistance to farmers to revive agricultural production.
Community Resilience and Preparedness
Despite the devastation, residents continue to show remarkable strength. Local leaders are urging communities to stay vigilant as aftereffects of the typhoon may still pose risks. They also encourage preparedness for future disasters, with improved warning systems and evacuation protocols.
The declaration of a state of calamity marks a critical step in addressing the immediate needs of Cagayan’s people and laying the groundwork for long-term recovery and sustainability.
