Canlaon City on Alert Against Landslides and Mudflows
Canlaon City in Negros Oriental remains on high alert against landslides and mudflows amid ongoing heavy rainfall and weather disturbances, officials reported on Thursday.
Seth Bariga, information officer at Canlaon City’s Emergency Operations Center, said local government units and emergency teams are closely monitoring weather conditions to protect residents from potential hazards.
Recent Landslide Incident Raises Concern
The increased vigilance follows a landslide in Manggapa, Barangay Masulog, triggered by intense rainfall over the weekend. Local leaders noted that the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office stands ready to respond swiftly, especially in landslide-prone and lahar flow-vulnerable areas.
Volcanic Activity and Lahar Flow Risks
Though the unrest of Mt. Kanlaon has subsided in recent weeks, the threat of lahar flows persists. Volcanic sediments from recent eruptions have accumulated on the mountain slopes and may be displaced by heavy rains. Community members reported a lahar flow incident in Biak-na-Bato, La Castellana, Negros Occidental, over the weekend.
Conditions at Padudusan Falls Remain Stable
Bariga also observed that the waters at Padudusan Falls-Natural Waterslide in Canlaon City remain clear. This is notable since the area was previously affected by lahar flow during the peak of volcanic activity.
Authorities continue to prioritize public safety by maintaining heightened alertness and ensuring readiness to respond to any emergencies related to landslides and mudflows.
