Fatal Car Crash Outside Sanxia School Leaves Three Dead
A tragic accident unfolded outside a school in Sanxia New Taipei City, Taiwan, when a car suddenly crashed into a group of people, mostly students. This devastating incident involved a car colliding with students and bystanders near the school, resulting in multiple casualties.
Reports indicate that the crash occurred at around 4:00 pm local time (0800 GMT) when a 78-year-old male driver ran a red light. The vehicle hit three motorcycles and a bicycle before striking the students and several adults gathered nearby. This event, described as a sudden acceleration of the vehicle for unknown reasons, shocked the community.
Immediate Response and Rescue Efforts
Footage shared by local authorities showed bystanders performing chest compressions on victims lying on the road. Meanwhile, emergency responders transported injured individuals to the hospital. In total, about 15 people, including the driver, were rushed to medical facilities with injuries of varying severity.
Victims and Age Range
Among the injured were nine students aged 12 to 15 from Sanxia Junior High School. The youngest victim was a six-year-old attending a nearby kindergarten. Sadly, three people later died in the hospital, including two 12-year-old children and a 40-year-old woman.
Authorities confirmed that the driver was unconscious during the incident but tested negative for alcohol consumption. Investigations into the cause of the sudden acceleration are ongoing.
Government Officials Respond to the Tragedy
The Presidential Office expressed deep sorrow over the accident. President Lai Ching-te visited the hospital to check on the victims and ordered the creation of a task force to support the affected families and oversee the investigation.
Similarly, New Taipei City Mayor Hou Yu-ih visited the injured and promised swift accountability. “We will clarify the responsibility as soon as possible and give the public an explanation,” said Hou.
