Major Seizure of Fake Cigarettes in Caraga Region
Authorities recently wrapped up an 18-day operation targeting smuggling activities across the Caraga region, resulting in the confiscation of counterfeit cigarettes valued at P932,550. The crackdown also led to the arrest of nine suspects linked to the illegal trade.
The operation’s largest haul occurred in Surigao del Norte, where officials recovered fake cigarettes worth P857,400 in the towns of Dapa and Claver. Additional efforts in Surigao del Sur and Agusan del Sur yielded contraband valued at P68,800 and P6,350 respectively.
Charges and Enforcement Against Smuggling
During the raids, police seized 46 cases containing different counterfeit cigarette brands. Those arrested now face charges under Republic Act 10643, also known as the Graphic Health Warnings Law, according to local authorities.
One police official emphasized the seriousness of the crackdown, stating, “This serves as a warning to smugglers, we will catch you.” The campaign involved multiple police units operating throughout the five provinces in the Caraga region.
