Carol Banawa, once known for her soulful songs, has now accomplished a significant personal achievement: earning her Master of Science in Nursing – Family Nurse Practitioner degree in the United States. Carol’s nursing career began quietly back in 2005 when she became a certified nurse aide in Arizona. Over the years, she steadily advanced her qualifications, earning a licensed practical nurse certificate in 2010. She then completed her associate degree in nursing in 2018, followed by a bachelor’s degree in 2020. These achievements paved the way for her to pursue a more demanding goal: a master’s degree.
Overcoming Challenges During the Pandemic
Starting her master’s program was challenging under any circumstances, but for Carol, the timing added extra difficulty. “When I began my master’s degree, the world was shutting down. The pandemic had just begun, and I was pregnant with Bella,” she shared, naming her youngest child.
Balancing pregnancy, parenting, and a rigorous academic program during uncertain times tested her resolve. “There were sleepless nights, long study sessions, missed gatherings, and so many moments where I had to say, ‘not now, I have to study,’” she recalled. She also admitted to moments of doubt and exhaustion but emphasized that her dream remained stronger than any obstacle: “The dream was stronger—and I just kept going.”
Family Support Fueled Her Perseverance
Carol credited her family for helping her persist through the challenging days, especially highlighting her husband’s unwavering support. “Thank you for working so hard behind the scenes so I could focus fully on my studies. Your love, encouragement, and sacrifices made this possible,” she acknowledged.
She also expressed heartfelt thanks to her children — Chelsea, River, and Bella — for their patience and understanding during her intense study periods. “Thank you for your patience and for all the times you understood when mommy had to study instead of play… Your hugs and kisses were everything.”
Her mother’s prayers, encouragement, and childcare assistance played a crucial role as well.
