MANILA, Philippines — The introduction of cashless payments and free Wi-Fi connections at the Metro Rail Transit Line 3 (MRT-3) aims to transform daily commutes for Filipinos. These new cashless payment methods now give passengers more convenient and secure options for paying their fares.
The Department of Transportation (DOTr) recently launched these cashless payments at MRT-3, highlighting the goal to simplify commuting. According to Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon, passengers can pay using GCash or their debit and credit cards, offering a faster and more efficient alternative to cash transactions.
Innovative Cashless Payments at MRT-3
During the launch event held at One Ayala MRT-3 Station, Secretary Dizon proudly shared, “This system is actually the first in the world.” This pioneering approach sets the MRT-3 apart by embracing modern technology that benefits millions of commuters daily.
By adopting these cashless payments, the DOTr expects to reduce queues and streamline passenger flow, especially during peak hours. The shift also aligns with the government’s push for digital transformation in public services.
Free Wi-Fi Enhances Passenger Experience
Alongside the payment system upgrade, Information and Communications Technology Secretary Henry Aguda announced the availability of free Wi-Fi at MRT-3 stations. This initiative supports the DOTr’s move toward online payments by enabling riders to connect to the internet easily and complete transactions via GCash.
Secretary Aguda added that efforts are underway to extend Wi-Fi access inside train cars. This will ensure passengers remain connected throughout their journey, making travel not only smoother but more productive or entertaining.
Local officials noted that these improvements will encourage more commuters to use public transport, reducing traffic congestion and pollution in Metro Manila. The combination of cashless payments and reliable internet connectivity represents a significant step forward in modernizing the country’s transit system.
