Castro: Release Plea for Mary Jane Veloso Urgently Delivered

Malacañang Promises to Relay Release Plea for Mary Jane Veloso

Malacañang assured Mary Jane Veloso’s supporters on Friday that their plea for her release will be promptly relayed to President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. The release plea for Mary Jane Veloso has become a rallying point among her family and advocates following her return from Indonesia.

Veloso has been held at the Correctional Institution for Women in Mandaluyong City since her transfer in December 2024. Earlier that day, relatives and supporters gathered to urge President Marcos to grant clemency and free her.

Palace Press Officer Claire Castro addressed the public during a briefing, saying, “If we’re not violating any laws and this will benefit our fellow citizens, then we will likely receive a positive response.” This statement reassured Veloso’s camp that their collective efforts have a chance of success.

Supporters Submit Thousands of Petitions for Release Plea

Relatives of Mary Jane Veloso, alongside groups such as Churches Witnessing with Migrants, Migrante International, the United Church of Christ in the Philippines, and Caritas Philippines, handed over letters and petitions bearing over 5,000 signatures. These documents appeal for Veloso’s immediate clemency and freedom.

The Philippine and Indonesian governments reached an agreement to repatriate Veloso after a decade of diplomatic negotiations and consultations. Her case has drawn significant attention due to its complex legal and humanitarian aspects.

A Decade-Long Fight and the Release Plea for Mary Jane Veloso

In 2010, Veloso was arrested at Adisucipto International Airport in Yogyakarta when authorities found over 2.6 kilograms of heroin in her luggage. She has consistently maintained her innocence, claiming she was unaware of the drugs and that recruiters Julius Lacanilao and Maria Cristina Sergio had handed her the luggage.

Her story has touched many as she faced death row in Indonesia for 14 years, fighting for justice amid challenging circumstances. The release plea for Mary Jane Veloso symbolizes the hopes of her family and supporters who believe in her innocence and seek her freedom.

Looking Ahead: The Road to Freedom

While the legal process continues quietly, Veloso’s supporters remain hopeful that the government will act swiftly on their appeal. The promise from Malacañang to bring the release plea for Mary Jane Veloso to President Marcos signals a critical step in her pursuit of justice.
