CBCP Denies Endorsing Senatorial Candidates Ahead of Elections
The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) has firmly denied claims circulating on social media that it has endorsed specific senatorial candidates for the upcoming May 12 elections. The CBCP reminded the public to exercise caution and verify information before accepting such posts as truth.
False Letters and Misleading Claims
These viral posts include a supposed letter allegedly signed by CBCP president Cardinal Pablo Virgilio David, listing endorsed Senate candidates. However, CBCP Secretary General Msgr. Bernardo Pantin clarified that the Church does not support or endorse any individual candidate.
Instead, the CBCP focuses on providing moral guidance and social teachings to help Filipino Catholics make informed and responsible voting decisions. Pantin emphasized, “If names of candidates are mentioned in supposed Church endorsements, consider them false or misleading.”
Kalookan Diocese Speaks Out
The Diocese of Kalookan, under the leadership of Cardinal David, issued a separate statement confirming the letter’s inauthenticity. They urged the public to be vigilant and verify facts before sharing information online, especially as the nation approaches the elections.
Maintaining a Non-Partisan Stance
Historically, the CBCP has maintained a neutral position during elections. The institution encourages voters to carefully evaluate candidates based on their track records, platforms, and values, all aligned with Catholic social teachings.
As the May 12 elections draw near, the CBCP continues to promote thoughtful reflection rather than political endorsements. They remind the faithful to focus on choosing leaders who uphold moral integrity and genuinely serve the common good.
