CBCP Elects Lipa Archbishop Gilbert Garcera as President
MANILA, Philippines — The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) has chosen Lipa Archbishop Gilbert Garcera as its next president. This decision came during their meeting on Saturday, marking a significant leadership change within the Catholic Church hierarchy in the country.
Archbishop Garcera, 66, will officially begin his term on December 1, 2025. The CBCP noted that the key leadership role carries a two-year term, with the possibility of reelection for another two years. This appointment ensures that Garcera will guide the bishops’ collegial body for the coming years.
Leadership Transition and Responsibilities
He will succeed Cardinal Pablo Virgilio David of Kalookan, who is concluding his second and final term in November. Garcera currently represents Southeast Luzon on the CBCP Permanent Council, a role that highlights his influence within the organization.
Since 2017, Archbishop Garcera has served as the chief shepherd of the Archdiocese of Lipa, overseeing a vibrant Catholic community of over 3.3 million faithful. His leadership there has earned recognition for its pastoral care and mission-oriented approach.
Archbishop Garcera’s Past Roles and Contributions
Beyond his current responsibilities, Garcera has held prominent positions in the CBCP, including chairing the Commission on Mission and the Commission on Family and Life. These roles demonstrate his deep commitment to the Church’s outreach and family welfare initiatives.
Before becoming a bishop, he served as assistant secretary general of the CBCP and executive secretary of the Episcopal Commission on Mission. Additionally, he was the national director of the Pontifical Mission Society, underscoring his extensive experience in Church affairs.
Ordained as a priest in 1983 for the Archdiocese of Caceres, Garcera was appointed bishop of Daet in 2007. His leadership extends beyond the Philippines; he also contributed to the Federation of Asian Bishops’ Conferences as chairman of the Office on Laity and Family and directed its synodal leadership seminar for Asian bishops.
International Engagement and Vatican Participation
In 2014, he was one of three Philippine bishops chosen to represent the country at the Synod on the Family at the Vatican. This role highlights his stature and the trust placed in him by the Church to address critical family issues on a global stage.
Starting December 2025, Archbishop Garcera will lead the CBCP alongside Zamboanga Archbishop Julius Tonel, who was elected as vice president. Their leadership marks a new chapter for the organization as it continues to serve millions of Filipino Catholics.
