CEAP Calls for Sonny Angara’s Return to DepEd Leadership
The Catholic Educational Association of the Philippines (CEAP) has appealed to President Marcos to reinstate former senator Sonny Angara as Secretary of the Department of Education (DepEd). CEAP highlighted Angara’s decisive leadership and commitment to reforming the country’s education system within a short period. This call comes after President Marcos requested a Cabinet-wide courtesy resignation on May 22, prompting Angara to submit his resignation the same day.
CEAP expressed hope that the President “would find merit in the accomplishments” of Angara and consider bringing him back to lead the education department. The association emphasized the importance of maintaining stability in DepEd amid ongoing efforts to improve educational outcomes.
Support for Sonny Angara’s Achievements
CEAP praised Secretary Angara for his prompt actions addressing urgent issues in the Philippine education sector. They noted his willingness to engage in open dialogue and his deep understanding of the challenges faced by both educators and students. According to CEAP, Angara has “effectively addressed numerous challenges facing the Philippine education system” in a “remarkably” short time.
“Under his leadership, we have witnessed a leader who truly listens and has much to contribute to our government’s efforts,” CEAP stated. The association considers Angara’s approach vital to continuing and expanding education reforms.
Ensuring Stability Within the Department of Education
CEAP stressed that continuity and stability are crucial for the Department of Education, especially during this critical phase of educational recovery and reform. Local education experts noted that insulating the sector from political shifts is essential to sustain long-term progress.
“There is an urgent need for stability within the Department of Education, especially in these challenging times,” CEAP emphasized. The association pointed out that education forms the “bedrock of democracy, nurturing responsible and informed citizens,” so it must remain free from political influence.
With over 1,525 member schools and more than 120 superintendents, CEAP stands as the country’s largest network of Catholic schools. The association advocates for quality, inclusive education grounded in Christian values and plays a significant role in shaping national education policies and reforms.
