Cebu Bus Rapid Transit Launches Pilot Operations in September

Cebu Bus Rapid Transit to Begin Pilot Operations

The Department of Transportation (DOTr) announced that the Cebu Bus Rapid Transit (Cebu BRT) pilot operations will commence in September 2025. This new system is set to transform daily commutes, benefiting thousands of passengers across key locations.

Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon shared that at least 70,000 commuters are expected to use the Cebu Bus Rapid Transit during its initial phase. The pilot will cover three major stations: Fuente, Cebu Normal University, and Cebu South Bus Terminal Station. “The Cebu BRT is a big deal for our Cebuano compatriots. We are already expediting the construction of other BRT stations so that this project can reach more areas and more commuters,” Dizon said during a meeting in Cebu, according to officials.

Expanding Cebu Bus Rapid Transit Network

The DOTr is accelerating the development of additional stations to extend the reach of the Cebu Bus Rapid Transit. Following the pilot, construction will proceed on the Cebu Capitol station. Officials emphasized that its design is being refined to convert it from a curbside stop to a median station, which promises improved traffic flow and commuter convenience.

Secretary Dizon assured the public, “Our Cebuano compatriots can count on us to do everything we can to help our commuters make their journeys faster and more comfortable.”

Future Phases and Completion Timeline

Looking ahead, the DOTr aims to complete Phases 2A and 3A of the Cebu Bus Rapid Transit before the end of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s term in 2028. These phases include 13 stations and 62 bus stops, significantly expanding the system’s coverage.

Free Rides Program Launches in Cebu

In a related development, DOTr and the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board have launched a “Libreng Sakay” (free rides) program along the Urgello-Parkmall route. This initiative, the first of its kind in the Visayas region, began on Wednesday and will operate daily from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. The program aims to ease the burden on daily commuters and promote the Cebu Bus Rapid Transit.

With these efforts, the Cebu Bus Rapid Transit project is poised to revitalize public transportation in the city, offering faster, more efficient, and comfortable travel options for thousands of Cebuanos.
