Fatal Van Crash on Central Luzon Link Expressway
The Department of Transportation has permanently revoked the license of the driver involved in the recent Central Luzon Link Expressway crash. This tragic accident claimed five lives and injured eight others along the busy expressway in Tarlac City on August 12, 2025.
According to local authorities, driver John Paul Baptista Martin lost control of his van before it collided with a perimeter fence on the Central Luzon Link Expressway. Police confirmed that Martin tested positive for drugs following the incident, intensifying concerns over road safety in the region.
Casualties and Injuries Reported
Four passengers inside the van were pronounced dead upon arrival at the Tarlac Provincial Hospital. Another victim was declared dead on arrival at Jecson Medical Center. Meanwhile, eight other passengers sustained injuries and were rushed to these medical facilities for immediate treatment.
Driver’s License Suspension and Investigation
The Land Transportation Office initially suspended Martin’s driver’s license for 90 days after the accident. However, following further review, the Department of Transportation escalated the penalty to a permanent revocation. This decision underscores the gravity of the driver’s reckless behavior on the Central Luzon Link Expressway.
Authorities also revealed that Martin had been issued a show-cause order, requiring him to appear before the Land Transportation Office’s Intelligence and Investigation Division. He must explain why he should not be held accountable for reckless driving and why his license should not be revoked.
Owner’s Accountability Questioned
In addition to the driver, the van’s registered owner, Ma. Lourdes Picardal, was summoned to the same division for questioning. Officials seek to determine the extent of her responsibility regarding the incident on the Central Luzon Link Expressway.
Community and Official Reactions
Local leaders expressed deep sorrow over the accident and called for stricter enforcement of traffic laws to prevent similar tragedies. Community members also urged for enhanced drug testing protocols for drivers operating public vehicles.
