Central Philippine University Condemns Shooting of Stray Dogs
ILOILO CITY – Central Philippine University (CPU) has strongly condemned the recent shooting of two stray dogs within its campus grounds. This incident, described by local animal advocates as an act of cruelty, has sparked concern among the university community.
According to reports, the shooting occurred around midnight near the Senior High School building’s parking area. While one of the dogs managed to flee, the other sadly died and was reportedly wrapped in a black garbage bag before being placed in the back of a white pickup truck.
University’s Strong Stance Against Animal Cruelty
In a statement released on May 30, the Office of the University President expressed firm disapproval of any violent acts toward animals. “CPU strongly condemns any act of cruelty against animals,” the statement read. It emphasized the institution’s commitment to compassion and respect for all living beings, stating, “As a Christ-centered institution grounded in compassion and respect for life, CPU does not tolerate violence in any form, especially against innocent and defenseless creatures.”
Community Reactions and Investigation Underway
Photos and messages shared by a local dog shelter, Ilonggo Aspins, detailed witness accounts of the shooting. The shelter highlighted the timing of the act, noting, “This is so terrible. It looks like it was ordered and planned to be done during the middle of the night so no one would know.”
The university administration has promptly launched a thorough investigation. They are working closely with campus security and local authorities to ensure the perpetrators are held accountable. “We are coordinating with the security agency involved and relevant authorities to ensure that accountability is upheld, and appropriate actions are taken based on the findings,” the university stated.
Campus Community Responds with Compassion
The incident has prompted many alumni and current students to share memories of feeding stray dogs and cats around the campus, reflecting a culture of kindness toward animals. CPU reassured the public of its dedication to humane and ethical treatment of animals, noting, “The University community embraces a culture of care. Many of our students, faculty, and staff are animal lovers, and the University President himself is a proud dog owner.”
