Charity Boxing Match Raises Over P20M Aid for Flood Victims
Thousands gathered at Manila’s Rizal Memorial Coliseum on July 27, 2025, to witness the charity boxing match between Philippine National Police chief Gen. Nicolas Torre III and acting Davao City Mayor Baste Duterte. The event successfully raised over P20 million in cash assistance and relief goods for flood victims.
Gen. Torre announced the total after being declared the winner by default when Duterte failed to appear that Sunday morning. “You are our sponsors and donors—thank you very much,” Torre expressed gratefully. “As of the latest report, we collected P340,000 from entrance fees and raised P16 million from donors outside the event.”
Generous Donations Support Relief Efforts
Beyond cash donations, the organizers gathered two tons of rice and canned goods valued at approximately P4.2 million. Torre emphasized that these combined efforts would greatly assist those affected by recent disasters. The collected funds and donations will be handed over to the Department of Social Welfare and Development, the Philippine Red Cross, and its Quezon City chapter, local leaders noted.
PNP Chief Visits Flood-Hit Communities
Following the event, Gen. Torre personally visited flood-affected communities near Baseco Port in Manila to assess the situation and deliver aid. The southwest monsoon (habagat) alongside severe tropical storms Crising, Dante, and Emong has impacted around 6.5 million people, or approximately 1.8 million families nationwide.
According to the state weather bureau, the habagat continues to affect most parts of the country. Tropical Storm Dante has weakened into a low-pressure area located about 690 kilometers north-northwest of Itbayat, Batanes, with a low chance of reintensification and expected to dissipate soon. Meanwhile, Tropical Depression Co-may (formerly Emong) is forecast to weaken over the next few days and was last spotted roughly 875 kilometers northeast of Extreme Northern Luzon.
This charity boxing match raised over P20 million in aid, showcasing the community’s strong support and solidarity in times of disaster. For more news and updates on disaster relief efforts, visit Filipinokami.com.
