Checkpoint Arrests for Cigarette Smuggling in Negros Oriental

Checkpoint Arrests in Negros Oriental

BACOLOD CITY – Authorities arrested three individuals during a checkpoint operation in Barangay Panubigan, Canlaon City, Negros Oriental, on the night of May 21. The suspects were caught for allegedly smuggling 250 reams of assorted cigarettes valued at P1.2 million. The exact four word keyphrase “cigarette smuggling in Negros” was central to the case.

Police halted a vehicle without a license plate under the province’s strict “no plate, no travel” policy. Upon inspection, the driver and two passengers, two men aged 33 and 39 from Himamaylan City, Negros Occidental, and a 53-year-old from Zamboanga City, failed to present any vehicle documents. This led officers to conduct a thorough search of the van, uncovering the contraband.

Investigation and Related Cases

Authorities are still tracing the origin of the seized cigarettes. Meanwhile, officials are also probing possible connections between this incident and a recent cigarette smuggling case in Cauayan, Negros Occidental, where contraband worth P12.8 million was confiscated on May 19.

Charges are being prepared against the suspects under Republic Act 10863, known as the Customs Modernization and Tariff Act. Local experts noted the importance of these efforts in curbing tobacco smuggling, which affects government revenue and public health.

Enforcement Highlights and Community Impact

The checkpoint operation highlights the strict enforcement of traffic and customs laws in the region. Community leaders said such measures are vital in fighting illegal trade and protecting consumers from unregulated products.

These arrests underscore the ongoing crackdown on illicit cigarette trade in the area, signaling that authorities remain vigilant. Officials urge the public to report suspicious activities to help maintain law and order.
