Engineer’s Mission to Highlight Children With Cancer
Engineer Philipp “PJ” Santiago embarked on a challenging climb up Mt. Everest to bring attention to the struggles of children with cancer. His goal was not only to raise awareness about their fight but also to spotlight the need for clean water in the Philippines. The four-word keyphrase, children with cancer awareness, was central to his mission and message.
“Cure children’s cancer. Climbing Mount Everest is very little compared to the battles these little warriors are facing every day. We aim to give attention and awareness to their plight and for their cause,” Santiago expressed.
Preparation and Training in Nepal
In 2023, Santiago made two trips to Nepal to prepare for the ascent. He first reached the Everest Base Camp, followed by climbing a smaller mountain to practice ice and snow climbing techniques. His rigorous training was essential for the demanding conditions on Everest.
In April, Santiago returned with his cousin Karl, who supported the climb from base camp. Joining a multinational team, Santiago aimed to become the sixth Filipino to reach the summit of the 29,000-foot peak.
Challenges Faced During the Climb
Tragically, the group encountered an avalanche that struck last, resulting in injuries for Santiago, including a cheek wound and a brief loss of consciousness. After resting for six days, doctors cleared him to continue his ascent. He was last spotted alive at Camp 4, the final camp before the summit push.
Despite rescue efforts, Santiago’s remains have yet to be recovered from the mountain, underscoring the risks climbers face while undertaking such missions.
Continuing the Cause for Children With Cancer Awareness
Santiago’s climb was more than a personal feat; it was a powerful effort to shed light on children with cancer awareness and the urgent need for clean water in communities back home. His dedication inspires ongoing support for these critical causes.
