China’s Interest in Meddling Philippine Elections
Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro has confirmed that China has an interest in meddling Philippine elections. When asked about reports of interference, he explained that such attempts are always present—not only from China but also from non-state rogue actors.
Teodoro emphasized, “China really has an interest in interfering with our elections. It’s obvious because meddling is part of their DNA.” He further elaborated that China was born out of a revolution in 1949. According to him, one of Mao Tse Tung’s mission statements was to spread continuous revolution worldwide, which explains their ongoing involvement.
Insights on China’s Election Interference Interest
On April 24, National Security Council spokesperson Assistant Director General Jonathan Malaya informed a Senate committee about signs pointing to Chinese interference in the Philippines’ upcoming midterm polls. Despite these concerns, China denies the allegations.
In a press briefing, Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun stated, “China follows the principle of non-interference in other countries’ domestic affairs.” He added, “We have no interest in interfering in Philippine elections.”
Defense Secretary Details China’s Methods
Defense Secretary Teodoro revealed that China conducts what he calls “united front work,” which includes efforts led by a specific government department. He described these operations as “illegal, coercive, aggressive, and deceptive.”
He explained that such strategies are part of China’s way to influence the political landscape in the Philippines. These actions go beyond simple diplomacy and reflect a more strategic and persistent approach to meddling.
Understanding the Broader Context of Election Meddling
These developments highlight the ongoing challenges the Philippines faces in protecting its electoral processes. Aside from China, there are also non-state actors who attempt to sway election outcomes through various means.
As the midterm elections approach, vigilance remains crucial to ensure a fair and transparent voting process free from foreign interference.
