China-Philippines Relations: Neighbors That Cannot Move Apart
Despite ongoing tensions, the China-Philippines relations remain a vital connection between two neighboring countries. Chinese Ambassador to Manila Huang Xilian emphasized this bond, calling the nations “neighbors that cannot move apart.” This key phrase highlights the enduring ties despite disagreements.
In a Facebook post on June 9, the ambassador commemorated the 50th anniversary of diplomatic ties and the 24th China-Philippines Friendship Day. He expressed hope for a future where cooperation prevails over conflict. “We are neighbors that cannot move apart. Good-neighborliness serves the fundamental interests of both peoples,” Huang wrote.
Looking Toward a Better Future
Huang urged people from both nations to work together to foster healthy and stable development. “It is our sincere hope that more and more people will join our efforts to bring China-Philippines relations into a better future of healthy and stable development,” he added. He also called for revisiting the original vision of their forefathers, emphasizing cooperation instead of confrontation and dialogue instead of conflict.
Philippine Embassy’s Initiative Highlights Filipino Contributions
Meanwhile, the Philippine Embassy in China launched the #MadeItInChina online series. This initiative showcased the achievements of Filipinos living and working in China, shining a light on their contributions to various communities and professions. More than 50 Filipinos were featured from January to June 2025, illustrating the positive impact of Filipino expatriates.
Challenges in the South China Sea
Despite these positive gestures, tensions remain over the South China Sea. China claims nearly the entire resource-rich waterway, leading to disputes with the Philippines. The Philippines won an arbitration case in 2016, but China continues to reject the ruling, keeping the issue unresolved.
The 50th anniversary serves as a reminder of the long-standing relationship between China and the Philippines. Both countries face challenges but also opportunities to strengthen their ties through dialogue and cooperation.
