China’s Shadowing of Philippine Vessels Raises Concerns
On May 26, two civilian vessels en route to Pag-Asa Island for the first-ever sea concert in the West Philippine Sea faced close monitoring by Chinese Coast Guard ships. This incident, described as “China shadows Philippine vessels,” has drawn strong condemnation from local leaders.
According to sources familiar with the matter, the Chinese ships even crossed into the Philippines’ exclusive economic zone (EEZ), intensifying tensions in the disputed waters. The vessels were just 54 nautical miles off the coast of El Nido, Palawan when shadowed.
Peace Concert Meets Unwelcome Response
Akbayan Party-list Representative Perci Cendaña criticized China’s actions, questioning the motive behind such a show of force against a peaceful cultural event. He said, “Matapos nating imbitahan ang China through their embassy sa ating sea peace concert at hindi sila tumugon– ngayon nag-aasta silang gatecrasher sa ating EEZ.”
This translates to expressing frustration that after inviting China to participate in the sea peace concert through diplomatic channels, the country ignored the invitation and instead acted aggressively within Philippine waters.
Asserting Sovereignty Through Culture
Cendaña described the shadowing as “a blatant act of bullying against Filipino civilians and artists asserting our sovereign rights through peaceful means.” He emphasized that this incident near El Nido is unacceptable and threatens the peaceful assertion of Filipino presence in the West Philippine Sea.
The sea concert, organized by the Atin Ito coalition, aims to promote Filipino solidarity and cultural expression in the West Philippine Sea without military involvement. Cendaña affirmed Akbayan’s full support for this third civilian mission.
Music as a Symbol of Resistance
He further explained, “The Sea Concert for Peace is a powerful symbol of unity and courage. While China wields coercion, we respond with music and solidarity. While they sow fear, we sing for freedom. The [WPS] belongs to the Filipino people—not to a foreign bully.”
This peaceful cultural assertion highlights the Filipino people’s determination to protect their sovereign rights despite external intimidation.
Implications for Regional Stability
Local experts warn that such provocative actions by China could escalate tensions in the area. They emphasize the importance of peaceful dialogue and respect for international laws governing maritime boundaries.
This latest incident underscores the ongoing challenges faced by the Philippines in safeguarding its territorial rights while promoting peaceful coexistence in contested waters.
