CHR Unveils Karapatang Pantao 101 Module for Education

CHR Launches Karapatang Pantao 101 Module for Education

The Commission on Human Rights (CHR) has officially handed over its “Karapatang Pantao 101” module to the Department of Education (DepEd) to promote a human rights-centered approach in basic education. This collaboration aims to embed human rights principles in the country’s educational system.

CHR Commissioner Beda A. Epres met with Education Secretary Sonny Angara to discuss how the agency will support DepEd’s ongoing programs that protect and uphold the rights of learners. The handover of the Karapatang Pantao 101 module marks a significant step toward integrating human rights awareness in schools nationwide.

Partnership to Empower Teachers and Learners

The Karapatang Pantao 101 module was co-created by CHR in partnership with the Initiatives for Dialogue and Empowerment through Alternative Legal Services (IDEALS) and the Catholic Educational Association of the Philippines (CEAP). This resource serves as a comprehensive guide for educators to incorporate human rights education within the K-12 curriculum effectively.

According to sources, the CHR will help DepEd by training teachers on Human Rights-Based Pedagogy, ensuring that educators are well-equipped to deliver this vital content to students. This capacity-building effort is crucial for fostering a culture of respect and dignity from the classroom level.

Module Highlights and Educational Goals

The latest 2023 edition of the Karapatang Pantao 101 module is accessible online, making it widely available for educational institutions. It focuses on deepening students’ understanding of human rights, encouraging active participation in advocacy, and highlighting the shared responsibility among individuals, communities, and the government to uphold these rights.

The module also aims for learners to grasp fundamental human rights concepts, recognize proper promotion and violations, and develop skills to report abuses effectively. This comprehensive approach ensures that students are not only informed but also empowered to act.

Building a Foundation for a Just Future

In the introduction, CHR’s Director IV for Human Rights Education and Promotion Office, Atty. Francis Temprosa, emphasized the importance of knowing one’s rights. He said in Filipino, “Knowing our rights is a strong foundation in building a secure and dignified future. When we understand what our rights are, we become more aware, more empowered to claim them, and more capable of participating in their protection and promotion.”

This initiative reflects a growing commitment to human rights education as a cornerstone for nurturing informed and responsible citizens.
