CHR Calls for Investigation on Intimidation Threats Against Media Members
The Commission on Human Rights (CHR) has urged relevant government agencies to thoroughly investigate allegations of intimidation and threats against media members during this year’s mid-term elections. Protecting press freedom remains essential, especially in ensuring a transparent electoral process.
Reports indicate that some journalists covering the 2025 mid-term elections faced obstacles, including being denied entry to polling stations despite presenting valid identification issued by the Commission on Elections (Comelec). Furthermore, several media workers reported experiencing intimidation and surveillance by unknown individuals while performing their duties.
Press Freedom and Public’s Right to Information
The CHR emphasized that such incidents seriously undermine press freedom and the public’s right to timely and accurate information—both critical components of any democratic election. The media’s role in promoting transparency and accountability throughout the voting process cannot be overstated.
Any attempt to obstruct journalists threatens not only their safety and freedom but also the fundamental democratic right of every Filipino to be informed about their vote. The CHR reminded election authorities, law enforcement personnel, and local officials to uphold and protect the rights of media workers at all times.
Recommendations to Protect Journalists During Elections
To prevent further obstruction, the CHR called for clear communication and consistent enforcement of Comelec’s media access guidelines across all polling precincts. Additionally, it recommended that election personnel and security forces undergo orientation on journalists’ rights, including existing laws on press freedom and proper handling of security concerns.
Such measures aim to ensure that media coverage proceeds without interference or fear, safeguarding the democratic process and the public’s access to reliable election information.
