CIDG Apprehends Suspect in Cotabato
The Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) successfully arrested an alleged Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters member on murder charges in Cotabato. This arrest highlights the ongoing efforts of law enforcement to bring justice to communities affected by violent incidents.
Authorities reported that the North Cotabato Regional Trial Court had issued warrants for murder and attempted murder against the suspect in late 2019 and early 2020. These warrants were served during the operation that led to the suspect’s detention.
Details of the Arrest
During the arrest, CIDG operatives recovered several items from the suspect, including a caliber .45 pistol, a steel magazine, six rounds of live ammunition, four smartphones, and three keypad phones. These items were taken into custody as part of the investigation.
Officials identified the suspect as alias “Maro,” a 29-year-old individual believed to be associated with the BIFF-Bungos Faction. Community members noted that Maro was among a group allegedly involved in a violent attack resulting in the death of a respected local elder.
Background of the Incident
According to reports, Maro was one of 12 BIFF members who attacked Tiyo Takuranga Egap, a prominent elder in the Midsayap area of North Cotabato. The assault occurred in April 2019 and tragically resulted in Mr. Egap’s death due to multiple hack wounds.
The suspect is also listed as the Number 9 Regional Level Most Wanted Person by the Police Regional Office 12, underscoring the priority placed on his apprehension.
Collaborative Efforts in the Operation
Given the risks involved, the CIDG Maguindanao Provincial Field Unit coordinated with several specialized units during the arrest. These included the PNP Special Action Force, Mindanao Area Police Intelligence Office, Regional Mobile Force Battalions 12 and 14-A, and local police units. The collaborative effort ensured the operation was conducted safely and effectively at the suspect’s residence in Kadayangan, Cotabato, Special Geographic Area.
These developments mark a significant step in addressing security concerns and maintaining peace within the region.
