Classes Suspended Due to Tropical Depression Crising Impact

Classes Suspended Due to Tropical Depression Crising and Habagat

Several local government units have suspended classes on Thursday, July 17, as Tropical Depression Crising and the southwest monsoon, known locally as “habagat,” continue to bring heavy rains and strong winds. The early announcement of class suspensions aims to protect students and staff amid deteriorating weather conditions.

These class suspensions affect both public and private schools across various areas, reflecting the serious impact of the ongoing inclement weather. Residents are urged to stay alert and follow advisories issued by local authorities and weather agencies.

Areas with Class Suspensions

Classes are suspended in the following locations:

  • Negros Oriental – all levels, public and private schools
  • Kabankalan City, Negros Occidental – all levels, public and private schools
  • Binalbagan, Negros Occidental – all levels, public and private schools
  • La Castellana, Negros Occidental – all levels, public and private schools

Current Status of Tropical Depression Crising

According to a 5:00 p.m. weather bulletin from a national meteorological agency, Tropical Depression Crising was last spotted 625 kilometers east of Virac, Catanduanes. It maintains a maximum wind speed of 45 kilometers per hour, with gusts reaching up to 55 kilometers per hour. The system is moving west-northwest at 20 kilometers per hour.

Officials say Crising will continue moving generally westward over the next 12 hours before shifting northwest from the afternoon of July 17 through July 18. The storm may approach or make landfall near mainland Cagayan or the Babuyan Islands between Friday evening and early Saturday morning.

Precautionary Measures and Updates

Local leaders advise residents to stay updated with the latest weather information and heed any evacuation orders or safety measures. The combination of Tropical Depression Crising and the habagat is expected to bring heavy rains, which may cause flooding and landslides in vulnerable areas.

For the safety of students and personnel, class suspensions have been enforced early in many areas, ensuring minimal risk during travel and outdoor activities.
