Classes Suspended in Coastal Areas Due to Tsunami Alert
Digos City, Davao del Sur—Classes have been suspended in coastal areas as a precaution after a magnitude 8.7 earthquake struck Russia early Wednesday morning. The local government promptly acted following the national government’s tsunami warning to protect residents in vulnerable communities.
The suspension of classes at all levels in schools near the shorelines reflects the urgency felt by local authorities. This decision aims to keep students and residents safe while monitoring the situation closely.
Active Monitoring and Safety Measures in Place
John Sevilla, executive officer of the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office, shared that the four coastal villages are under constant surveillance. “We are monitoring the four coastal villages through our CCTVs, and disaster response personnel are also in those areas to ensure that nobody will be at the beach until the tsunami warning is over,” he said.
Meanwhile, disaster teams remain on standby to respond quickly if any emergency arises. Their presence serves to enforce the no-entry policy on beaches during this critical period.
Widespread Precautions in Davao Occidental Province
Similarly, coastal villages in Davao Occidental have also halted classes as local officials prioritize public safety. They have urged residents to avoid the beaches, heeding warnings from the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).
Phivolcs alerted communities along the Pacific Ocean coastlines by 9:22 p.m. Wednesday to stay clear of the shore due to potential sea disturbances triggered by the powerful earthquake.
Authorities remain vigilant, emphasizing that the early suspension of classes and the beach closures are necessary steps to minimize risks from possible tsunamis.
