Comelec Chair Garcia Takes Action After Bag Theft
Commission on Elections Chairman George Erwin Garcia is determined to file charges following the theft of his bag in Pasay City. The incident, which occurred last Tuesday, has prompted Garcia to seek justice to ensure that the suspects learn their lesson and refrain from targeting others in the future.
“I will pursue the case so they will not repeat the crime anymore, especially for those they will victimize again,” Garcia said in an online interview with reporters. He plans to file theft or robbery charges against the six individuals implicated in the incident.
Details of the Theft Incident
Officials reported that the theft happened on a Tuesday afternoon while Garcia was dining at a restaurant along Roxas Boulevard. Six suspects, who reportedly posed as customers, took advantage of the situation to steal the Commission on Elections chairperson’s bag.
The bag reportedly contained cash, identification cards, and a cellphone. The Southern Police District confirmed the arrest of a 44-year-old woman named “Hazel,” a resident of Las Piñas. However, five other suspects remain at large.
Suspects Identified as Members of ‘Salisi’ Gang
Through additional closed-circuit television footage, law enforcement identified three other suspects named “Romson,” “Alberto,” and “Jun.” These individuals are residents of Bacoor, Cavite, and are believed to be members of the notorious “salisi” gang. Their modus operandi involves one member distracting the victim while another steals their belongings.
Repeat Offender’s Arrest Raises Concerns
Community members noted that “Hazel” had been arrested previously in July for a similar crime. However, she was released after no charges were filed. Garcia expressed concern that without proper legal action, the suspects would continue to commit such offenses.
“No one pursued it before; therefore, they will repeat the crimes if no charges are filed against them,” Garcia added.
Moving Forward with Legal Action
The Commission on Elections chairperson’s firm stance on pursuing charges highlights the importance of accountability and deterrence. Authorities are continuing their investigation to apprehend the remaining suspects and bring them to justice.
