Comelec Highlights 2025 Midterm Elections Success
The Commission on Elections (COMELEC) declared the 2025 midterm elections as the most successful in Philippine history, citing its speed, peaceful conduct, and record-breaking voter turnout. This strong affirmation came amid increasing demands from outgoing Makabayan bloc lawmakers for a congressional probe into alleged election irregularities.
According to election officials, the 2025 midterm elections set new standards in efficiency and transparency. Comelec spokesperson Atty. John Rex Laudiangco emphasized the agency’s readiness to present comprehensive data to Congress if summoned. “We stand ready to appear before Congress if and when called upon,” he said, highlighting the fast pace of vote transmission and canvassing as well as the peaceful atmosphere during the polls.
Compliance With Election Automation Laws
Laudiangco reassured the public that the poll body fully complied with the automation requirements mandated by Republic Act No. 8436 and its amendments under RA 9369. He further indicated that COMELEC is open to implementing any future legislative changes, including proposals to introduce a hybrid election system. “We submit to the wisdom of Congress in legislating laws, should there be any amendments to the current election laws,” he added.
Calls for Congressional Investigation
In contrast, some lawmakers have called for an official investigation into the 2025 elections. House Resolution No. 2291, filed by representatives from the Kabataan Party-list, Gabriela Women’s Party, and ACT Teachers Party-list, urges Congress to look into alleged irregularities reported during the recent polls.
These reports from various election watchdog groups highlighted several concerns. Among the issues raised were discrepancies between audited and actual software versions used in Automated Counting Machines (ACMs), ballot jams, vote duplication, malfunctioning devices, and missing voter receipts, especially affecting overseas Filipino voters. Additional problems cited include overvotes, long queues at polling stations, and allegations of red-tagging. The use of election technology provider Miru Systems also drew scrutiny.
COMELEC Stands by Election Integrity
Despite these allegations, the election commission maintains the integrity of the 2025 polls. They affirm that all procedures were conducted in accordance with existing laws and established protocols. Local experts and community leaders have noted the significant progress made in election administration, especially in terms of transparency and voter participation.
