Comelec Begins Honoraria Distribution for Teachers
The Commission on Elections (Comelec) has initiated the distribution of honoraria for teachers who served as poll workers during the National and Local Elections. The prompt payment of these honoraria demonstrates the commission’s commitment to recognizing the hard work of educators during elections.
Comelec chairperson George Erwin Garcia emphasized that the poll body aims to complete the payment to teachers within less than ten days after Election Day. This timeline is well ahead of the legal requirement, as stipulated in the Election Service Reform Act (ESRA), which mandates disbursement within 15 days.
“Ang inuuna ng Comelec, for the last three days, ‘yung pagpapabigay ng honararia sa ating mga guro. Sa ESRA (Election Service Reform Act) Law, 15 days pagkatapos ng elections dapat maibigay na yun. Gusto natin dapat less than ten days dapat ma-distribute natin ang honoraria ng mga guro,” said Garcia.
The commitment to distribute teachers’ honoraria quickly reflects the commission’s priority to support educators who contributed significantly to the election process.
Honoraria Details and Regional Progress
Teachers who served as members of the Election Registration Board (ERB) will receive an additional honorarium of P2,000. This means regular ERB members will be paid P10,000, while chairpersons will get P12,000. These amounts compensate for the critical roles teachers played during the elections.
Some regions have already completed the distribution of teachers’ honoraria. For instance, Region 3 (Central Luzon) has finished paying all teachers who served, while Region 5 is close to completing theirs, with about 95% already distributed.
“Meron nang 100%. As of kahapon, sa Region 3 ay naibigay na sa lahat ng guro na naglingkod. ‘Yung Region 5, nasa 95% na ang distribution. Minamarapat natin na maibigay kaagad ang mga pinaghirapan ng guro,” Garcia added.
These efforts ensure that teachers receive their honoraria promptly, rewarding their dedication and service during the elections.
Preparations for 2025 Midterm Elections
Looking ahead, the Comelec plans to train at least 186,000 teachers to serve as ERB members for the upcoming 2025 midterm elections. This ongoing preparation highlights the importance of teachers in the election process and the continued focus on efficient and timely honoraria distribution.
Ensuring timely payment of teachers’ honoraria remains a crucial aspect of election management as it motivates educators to continue supporting the democratic process.
