Voting is set to proceed in areas struck by the recent Kanlaon Volcano eruptions on Negros Island, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) assures.
Comelec officials, led by Chairperson George Erwin Garcia, recently brought voter education and showcased the automated counting machines (ACMs) right inside an evacuation center in La Carlota, Negros Occidental.
“Ang ating ambisyon, at all costs, walang failure of elections, walang postponement, walang ide-deklara na resetting. Dapat lahat makaboto sa May 12,” Garcia emphasized. The message is clear: no interruptions, no delays. Every eligible voter must have the chance to cast their ballot on election day.
To accommodate displaced voters, satellite voting centers will be established inside evacuation sites. Garcia mentioned that voting hours might even be extended if necessary. “Walang pinagkaiba ito sa regular na presinto. Kung gaano karami ang presinto, ganun karami ang makina na ipapadala,” he added. In other words, these distant precincts get as many machines as the regular ones to ensure smooth voting.
Kanlaon Volcano remains on Alert Level 3 following eruptions in December 2024 and April 2025. Around 16,000 registered voters are currently affected, a number that could surge past 75,000 if the volcano’s alert level rises to Level 4.
Chairperson Garcia also encouraged voters living outside the evacuation centers to head to the satellite voting sites. “Makakaboto kayong lahat at bibilangin natin lahat ng boto ninyo,” he assured. Your vote counts—even in tough times.
