Comelec Suspends Proclamation of Several Eleksyon 2025 Candidates

Comelec Suspends Proclamation of Candidates

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) en banc has suspended the proclamation of multiple candidates in Eleksyon 2025 while resolving pending charges against them. Among those affected are Pasig congressional candidate Christian “Ian” Sia and Marikina congressional hopeful Marcy Teodoro.

Documents released on Tuesday revealed that a total of 19 local and national candidates have had their proclamations temporarily halted by the Comelec en banc. This move comes as the poll body investigates allegations against these candidates.

Comelec Chair George Erwin Garcia explained, “Pinag-aaralan ng Division kung ilan ang idadagdag pa.” (The Comelec Division is still studying how many other cases should be added.)

He also emphasized their impartiality, saying, “Hindi naka-depende ang pagkilos namin kung nananalo o natatalo… Even if on the assumption na nanalo ang dapat i-disqualify, hindi ‘yun ang basehan namin. Ang basehan pa rin namin ‘yung records kung meritorious ba ang kaso o hindi.” (Our actions do not depend if the candidate is winning or not. Even on the assumption that the candidate to be disqualified is winning, we will base on the records and the merit of the case.)

Charges Behind the Suspension of Proclamation

The Comelec has filed various charges against several candidates running in Eleksyon 2025. These include accusations such as vote-buying and violations of the poll body’s anti-discrimination rules.

Notably, the Comelec Second Division disqualified Ian Sia due to his inappropriate comments about sleeping with single mothers. Meanwhile, Teodoro and his wife, Maan, received show cause orders linked to alleged vote-buying and misuse of state resources. Maan has denied these allegations.

With the suspension of proclamation, the Comelec en banc ensures that the electoral process remains fair and free from misconduct. The investigation and resolution of these cases will determine whether the candidates can proceed with their campaigns and eventual proclamation.
