CHR Launches Probe on Erwin Segovia Killing
MANILA, Philippines — The Commission on Human Rights (CHR) has swiftly launched an investigation into the killing of radio broadcaster Erwin Segovia, also known as “Boy Pana,” in Surigao del Sur on July 21. The commission condemned the fatal shooting that occurred along the national highway in Barangay Mangagoy, Bislig City.
CHR Region XIII (Caraga) promptly initiated a motu proprio investigation and conducted a quick response operation to address the incident, sources said. Segovia was shot dead just 20 minutes after concluding his morning radio program on 98.1 Barangay Radio.
Details Surrounding the Tragic Incident
According to local reports, Segovia served as the station manager and program host for Radyo Gugma. The 63-year-old broadcaster was riding his motorcycle when assailants opened fire, ending his life abruptly. Authorities are still trying to determine the motive behind the attack.
“While the motive remains unclear, any act of violence against journalists casts a chilling effect on media practitioners across the country,” the CHR emphasized. The commission stressed the importance of protecting journalists so they can perform their duties without fear of threats or violence.
Upholding Freedom of Expression and Justice
The CHR reaffirmed that a free and independent press is vital to a functioning democracy. It highlighted the constitutional right to freedom of expression, citing the 1987 Philippine Constitution, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.
“Any attack on this right is an attack on democracy itself,” the commission stated. It acknowledged the swift actions taken by relevant authorities and called for a transparent, impartial, and swift investigation to ensure justice is served.
Local leaders noted the urgency in safeguarding media workers from similar attacks in the future. The incident sends a stark reminder of the dangers journalists face while fulfilling their roles.
